The late John McCain led a remarkable life.
Following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps, he served in the Navy, was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, served in the US Senate for 30 years, and ran for president twice.
He died at the age of 81 in 2018. He would have celebrated his 83rd birthday on August 29, 2019.

Republican Sen. John McCain died at the age of 81 in August 2018.

The Arizona senator was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer and began treatment for the disease in July 2017. McCain appeared to be undeterred for several months after his diagnosis was made public.

He was seen back at work on Capitol Hill in Fall 2017 and weighed in on major legislative policies, including the annual Biography of john mccain senate!
